It is said that Shanghai is a witness to the last 100 years of modern China. Shanghai is referred to as the “Oriental Pearl” because it consists of both eastern culture and western facilities. Shanghai is called “Hu” for short. It is situated on the estuary of River Yangtze. Due to its unfavorable position, foreign invasions have been common in this once provincial town. However during the 1920s and 1930s, Shanghai came to be called the “Oriental Paris” as it was transformed into a major international trade center. Its natural conditions are very advantageous. This brought about a rapid development in the region.
Established businesses and entrepreneurs were attracted to Shanghai. Some famous people who gave lectures in Shanghai include Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, Bertrand Russell, Bernard Shaw and Albert Einstein. But even though Shanghai had been ravaged by the invasions of the past, modern Shanghai has developed in a new light owing to the Great Reform and Opening Up since 1978.
Lujiazui in Pudong New Area is one of the most developed trade and financial zones in Asia. The Shanghai International Convention Center, Pudong International Airport and Oriental Pearl TV Tower have all the modern facilities imaginable to man. There is a mingling of the East and West in Shanghai.

A travel to Shanghai includes special attractions in the downtown area like the Xian Tian Di, Jinmao Tower, Shanghai Museum, Yuyuan Garden, Oriental Pearl TV Tower, the Huangpu River and not to mention, the Bund. The suburbs also consist of sights like the Chongming Island, Zhujajiao Water town and Qibao Ancient Town. Dining is a harmonious blend of the East and West.
